Welsh Simultaneous Translation Course

TRAINING TRANSLATORS

Elin Tudur, the experienced translator from Cardiff will be teaching a simultaneous translation course at the University of Glamorgan. The highly successful course is an opportunity for those who aren’t translators by profession to learn a new skill which could be used to the benefit of the community e.g. by providing a simultaneous translation service during PTA or community group meetings.

Rhian Powell, who is now the Community Translator for Morgannwg Gwent but at the time was a student in the Department of Welsh at the University of Wales, Swansea, is an example of someone who has benefited from the course.
‘I attended the course in 2002 whilst I was studying for my degree and used the course as an opportunity to enhance my skills and as something extra to include on my CV. Now I’m extremely pleased that I decided to attend the course as it has led to a career – though that wasn’t the intention at the time.’

Rhian is also very keen to stress that this is a course for anyone who is able to speak Welsh ‘I’ve spoken to many people who have shown an interest in attending the course but think that because they aren’t translators the course isn’t suitable for them. This is completely untrue because though someone is able to translate on paper, simultaneous translation is a completely different skill.

The course will be held every Monday evening 7.00 until 9.00 for 6 weeks at the University of Glamorgan starting on 26th February 2007.
